Show notes

In this episode Robert van Altena has a conversation with Dan Walsh about Decoys his sixth solo show at Slewe Gallery (on view up until 17 may).

Dan Walsh has brought from his studio in upstate New York a selection of his well known handmade artist books and a new collection of works on paper.
The title 'Decoys' refers to these new works on paper. Decoy is a word that has its origin in Dutch, it is derived from ‘eendekooi’ / duck cage. It is a cage used by hunters, and by association it got to mean the animal, either real or imitation, that was used to lure other animals.

Dan Walsh chose the word decoy as a playful metaphor for the technique he used to make these new works. Each work is a monotype, a unique transfer from an original painting by Walsh, but in the transfer from painted plate or sheet to paper the original painting is lost. However since the transfer to paper was the goal, the derived imaged is the original.
