Tussen 1890 en 1930 werden meer dan dertigduizend Javanen onder contract naar Suriname gebracht om te werken op de plantages – een systeem opgezet en gecontroleerd door Nederland. Shortly after the Trump administration took office, performing artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph was fired. Until then, he had served as the Artistic Director of Social Impact at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Oleksandra Matviichuk is a Ukrainian human rights lawyer. Since 2014 she has been documenting war crimes with her organization Centre for Civil Liberties, that was rewarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. In De Balie she speaks about the fate and role of citizens in war.Between the Maidan Revolution of Dignity and 2022, Matviichuk focused on documenting war crimes during the conflict in the Donbas region. In 2021, Matviichuk was nominated for the United Nations Committee Against Torture, making history as the first female candidate from Ukraine for a UN treaty body. She campaigned to reduce violence against women in conflict zones. In 2025, she became an ambassador for Protect Ukraine. Matviichuk has called for the prosecution of Vladimir Putin and Russian soldiers in a special tribunal, citing the extensive human rights violations committed by Russian forces.Preceding her lecture, Jaap Scholten gives a short introduction. Using her body as a medium, she challenges societal norms and exposes the consequences of sociocultural practices. Ros’ work has been showcased globally, including performances at prestigious events like the Venice Architecture Biennale (2016) and South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin (2018). The ‘Zeitenwende’, announced by Olaf Scholz days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, meant a profound shift in Germany’s self-image. With writer Philipp Oehmke and political analyst Caroline de Gruyter we explore the implications of this new cultural reality.After its defeat in the Second World War, Germany transformed from a militaristic regime into a soft power house. Self-conscious pacifism became a core part of the German identity. Is Germany now ready to become a military player of geopolitical significance? And how would that affect the German sense of self? We discuss this with German author Philipp Oehmke, who dissected post-war Germany in his family novel The Schönwalds, and Caroline de Gruyter, journalist and political commentator for outlets including Dutch newspaper NRC.Philipp Oehmke (1974) grew up in Bonn and studied journalism at Columbia University. After four years working for the magazine of the renowned Süddeutsche Zeitung, he switched to Der Spiegel. In 2015 he moved to New York, returning to Berlin in 2020. Oehmke is widely regarded as one of the best journalists of his generation. He is currently heading the culture section of Der Spiegel. His biography of the German punk band Die Toten Hosen spent several weeks on the bestseller list, as did his debut novel Schönwald. Oehmke is currently working on a sequel to Schönwald.Caroline de Gruyter is a journalist and political analyst. She is a European Affairs correspondent and columnist for the leading Dutch newspaper NRC and a regular contributor to Foreign Policy, EUobserver and De Standaard. With the war against Ukraine in its fourth year, we reflect on the situation in Ukraine and the broader hybrid war that Russia is waging against the West. On February 24th 2025, it was three years since Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine. What Russia expected to be a quick victory has turned into a bloody conflict, in which the Russians have already lost more than half a million soldiers, while the Ukrainians continue to hold their ground – albeit pushed onto the defensive.Meanwhile, the hybrid war that Russia is waging against the rest of Europe is becoming increasingly visible: ships sailing under foreign flags destroying critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, disinformation sowing chaos during elections in Moldova, and secret agents preparing (so far foiled) attacks on European airplanes and citizens. The conflict with Russia intensifies, but are we fully aware of the threat when only Ukrainians are doing the actual fighting?We pause to reflect on the situation on the ground in Ukraine and examine the broader European context. What challenges lie ahead for both Ukraine and Europe in the coming period? How are these challenges affected by the growing momentum of radical right parties in the West? Online platform Mister Motley voert actie om, na ruim twintig jaar kunstjournalistiek, niet ten onder te gaan, net als veel andere kunstinstellingen en platforms. Hoe bouwen we aan een duurzaam kunstveld?Een gezonde democratie is gebaat bij een veelzijdig kunstveld, inclusief inhoudelijk kunstdiscours. Er moet ruimte zijn voor jonge makers om hun werk te ontwikkelen en te tonen. En media waarin dat werk beschouwd en besproken wordt voor een groter publiek.
